What is Super Sod?Super Sod is more than just the sod we install, it’s an entire process. Our Super Sod process has been designed by our founder, Mr. D. J. Rittberg, who was trained as a Preventative Maintenance Engineer with specific experience with efficiency Management in the process control of production machinery. Since then he has incorporated Terra Verde Landscaping and spent 15 years in the Landscaping Industry developing efficiency and remediation strategies, like the Super Sod Process for problem lawns. Most lawns are suffering due to infestations, poor soil nutrients/light conditions or have grading and drainage issues which may require extensive fill and regrading. On occassion it could be required to design and build a retaining wall and/or developing a water management system, in-ground irrigation system, to sustain the lawn and plants needs. With a meticulous professional approach, Mr. Rittberg has developed the Super Sod Process which has helped hundreds and hundreds of homeowners, homebuilders and commercial companies identify the problems they are having with their grass and lawn areas, devise a plan for remediation and then implement the sustainable solution. |

The Super Sod Process
The process after confirming the root cause analysis, and perform soil testing if required, will then indicate the next step for remediation. If the lawn is determined to have grubs or weed infestations it is imperative that the old lawn is "cut out" or "dug out" at depth below the roots where the grubs feed. In this scenario no amount of rototilling will suffice as the root cause is left in ground with the tilled soil...it must be removed. For this we use specific machinery to cut out the sod below the root layer, and if we need to dig deeper because of weeds or evidence of clay soil on the surface we then use 2nd piece of machinery called a Toro Dingo excavator. This machine is very unique in that although small, only 34" wide and approx. 1600lbs, it can fit into most fenced backyards and as it is hydraulically powered it can remove the existing soil without damage to nearby driveways, or other buildings.
Once this first step is completed we then determine our final grade height and work to rebuild the subsoil by applying layer after layer of screened topsoil. It is important to note we dont use triple mix or garden soil for this step since those materials are also composed of peat and will expand and contract when water is applied creating difficulties to level the area or provide a smooth compacted final grade. As mentioned this area needs to be compacted to ensure the soil aggregates will not settle any further and we are at, or almost at, our final grade height. The last few centimetres needed to reach the final height are made up with the sod itself.
It's also very important to remember that sod is a living perishable none perfect product. As we are installing the sod we are checking to make sure each piece is healthy, insect and weed free and meets our expectations for health and color. The final step is yours; watering. The sod must be watered immediately after being installed. As it has been heating up in its rolled form and drying out, it must be watered thoroughly and thru to the soil beneath to ensure its root penetration into the subsoil and successfully grow in. Inadequate or insufficent watering is the most common problem when it comes to new lawns sod health, the finished result and your future lawns success.
